BackThis is a product of LE 589X LLC, registered at 1401 21st St Ste R, Sacramento, CA 95811. BackThis provides a technology platform that enables students to create pages for education-related expenses and receive backing from their community. We are not a charity, scholarship fund, financial institution, or educational institution.
You must be at least 13 years old to create a page on BackThis. Users between 13 and 17 years old must have verifiable parent or guardian consent and must provide their parent or guardian's name and email address during registration. The parent or guardian is responsible for managing funds received and ensuring they are used for education-related purposes. Users 18 and older may create and manage pages independently. By creating a page, you confirm that all information provided is accurate and that you intend to use backing for the stated educational purposes.
If a student is under 18, the listed parent or guardian assumes full legal responsibility for the student's page, the Stripe Connect account, the proper use of all funds received, and compliance with all applicable laws. The guardian will complete Stripe's identity verification process and will be the legal account holder for payment purposes.
All backing received through BackThis must be used for education-related expenses as described on the student's page, including but not limited to tuition, housing, books, supplies, and transportation. Misuse of funds is a violation of these terms and may result in account suspension, termination, and referral to appropriate authorities.
Payments are processed via Stripe Connect. Funds are received directly by the student's (or guardian's) connected Stripe account. BackThis and LE 589X LLC do not hold or control funds at any point.
BackThis charges a 5% platform fee on each backing, collected automatically at the time of payment. Stripe's standard processing fees (approximately 2.9% + 30¢) apply in addition to the platform fee. There are no monthly costs, setup fees, or hidden charges. The platform fee applies to both one-time and recurring (monthly) backings.
Backers may choose to set up recurring monthly backing for a student. Recurring backing is processed automatically each month on or near the anniversary of the original backing date. Backers may cancel their recurring backing at any time using the manage link provided in their receipt email or by contacting us at hello@backth.is. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — no further charges will be made after cancellation. Past monthly backings are not automatically refunded upon cancellation.
Students organize their backing goals by academic terms (e.g., Fall 2026, Spring 2027). Only one term may be active at a time on the student's public page. When a term is completed or a new term is activated, backing for the previous term stops and the new term's goal is displayed. Backing received above a term's goal is allocated proportionally across the term's funding items.
Individual backings are capped at $50,000 per transaction. BackThis reserves the right to adjust this limit at any time.
Users must comply with our Acceptable Use Policy. Prohibited activities include fraud, misrepresentation, using funds for non-education purposes, and any use that violates applicable law.
We collect personal information from students, guardians, and backers as described in our Privacy Policy and Data Policy. Special protections apply to data collected from users under 18.
You retain ownership of content you upload, including story responses and personal information. By posting content, you grant BackThis a non-exclusive license to display it on your page. The BackThis name, logo, and platform are the property of LE 589X LLC.
BackThis is provided “as is.” We are not liable for misuse of funds by students or guardians, payment processing issues handled by Stripe, the accuracy of information provided by students, or the outcome of any student's educational plans. Our total liability is limited to the platform fees collected in the 12 months preceding any claim.
Users agree to indemnify and hold BackThis and LE 589X LLC harmless from claims arising from their use of the platform, misuse of funds, or failure to comply with applicable laws.
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, our Acceptable Use Policy, misuse backed funds, or pose legal risk to the platform.
Any disputes arising from these terms shall be resolved through binding arbitration in Sacramento County, California, except where prohibited by law. Both parties waive the right to a jury trial.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict of law principles.
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or a notice on the platform. Continued use constitutes acceptance of updated terms.
